First Sergeant was born and raised in Jamaica until the age of 15 years old. In 1979, she migrated to Boston, Massachusetts and later joined the Army in 1982 and served on active duty for 22 years. First Sergeant retired on 30 April 2004.
During her military tenure, she served in many positions which include Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Training Non-Commissioned Officer, Customs Supervisor, Area Support Team Leader, Korean Linguist, First Sergeant and Acting Division Sergeant Major.
Her duty assignments include Fort Eustis – VA, Seoul – Korea, Fort Bragg- NC, Haiti, Honduras, Albania, Bosnia, Hanau-Germany, Orlando-Florida and South West Asia.
Her awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (w/2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (w/ 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal, (w/ 3 Oak Leaf Clusters) Parachute Badge, and the German Marksmanship Badge.
First Sergeant currently serves as the Executive Vice President for Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Sunshine Chapter and is also the Director of Programs for Women in Defense (WID) Central Florida. She is an active member of Kappa Epsilon Psi Military Sorority, Inc., Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club Orlando, National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), Orange County Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Council, Orlando Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Council, Semper Fidelis of America, Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 4287, Orange County Veterans Court Mentorship Program and a mentor at Jones High School JROTC.
First Sergeant is one of Orlando’s 2015 Veterans of Influence.
In addition to her numerous organizational affiliations, she represents the Orlando community by being a veteran advocate and volunteering over 40 hours per weeks assisting other veterans and members in the community. She frequently participates in local television and radio shows advocating on behalf of veterans.
